The Japan Arts Centre was founded in 1987 and is a member of the British Judo Association the governing body for Judo in Great Britain club no 2106
The club is an affiliated Police Sport UK club a National Body within the British Judo Association.
We aim to provide high quality technical classes for all ages and abilities with the ethos being on " Judo for Life". The Japan Arts Centre Judo Club is located in Clifton, Bristol.
We are approx 1/2 mile from the City Centre. We are a Police Sport UK club which is open to Police Officers, Support Staff and also to local residents and children.
The dojo is a traditional Japanese design with a permanent mat area.
We run a variety of Judo classes for all ages and abilities, from 5 years old to adults , and beginner to 6th Dan.
We are a friendly club where visitors are very welcome.
All of our coaches are fully trained to governing body standard and undergo continuous professional development.
In 2007 we were awarded the Sport England Clubmark , we are the first Judo club in Bristol to have acheived this standard.

What is Judo?
A Japanese martial art which has roots in Ju Jitsu. It has been established as a modern physical activity since 1882, and an Olympic sport since 1964. Judo is based on throwing and ground techniques.
There are around 1000 registered clubs in the U.K
What can Judo do for me?
Judo is an excellent form of physical education, it improves fitness and stamina, teaches technique, install discipline, self worth and confidence in a safe controlled atmosphere.
How old do I need to be ?
Classes are run for children from the age of 5 to adults aged 60+
What will need to wear?
To begin with you will need to wear loose fitting clothes that are able to stand pulling around. If you decide to continue your judo you will need a judo suit. We can supply them at a cost of £25 junior to £35 senior sizes. Check the notice board for pre owned kits, they usually sell for between £8-£15.
What will it cost?
Training fees for children are payable by the half term .Adults pay £3.50 per session. You will also need a governing body British Judo Association Licence. These cost £21 for under 16's and £29.00 for adults. This is essential and provides insurance cover and enables you to participate in BJA events.
How will I Progress ?
All judo clubs in Great Britain affiliated to the governing body follow the same grading system. Children aged 5+ follow a junior grading scheme of coloured belts and tabs, Adults follow a grading scheme of coloured belts You will be able to enter age and ability banded local, regional and national competitions. You will have the opportunity to be selected to represent your Regional squads, learn refereeing, represent your school or college or train to become a coach or official.
As a club we can offer high quality coaching from our experienced team to Children and Adults of all abilities.
We run childrens classes on a ratio of a maximum of 1:10 coaches to students more often though with 1:5 coaches to students.
All coaches hold governing body coaching qualifications and insurance.
Adult beginners will be offered a induction course apart from the main class with a small Coach to Student ratio
All participants are required to join the British Judo Association as a member after a four week induction period. Forms are available from Jo.
The current cost of this is £31 Adults and £21 under 16's
The club is able to offer students the opportunity :-
- To take part in Gradings and Championships on a regular basis.
- Opportunities to attend regular weekend residential course with top coaches from the UK and Overseas.
- Opportunities to qualify as Coaches, Officials and Referees are available to club members.
- Opportunities to train at full time Centres of Excellence at Bath University and Cardiff Institute of Sport through the Police Sport UK links with Team Bath and Welsh Judo Association.
