*Em selected for UK School Games *

Congratulations to Em who has been selected to represent Wales at the forthcoming UK School Games being held in Wales 3rd - 6th September . This is a great  honour and achievement for Em, a just reward for all her commitment to training.

The UK School Games is a multi-sport event for the UK's elite young athletes of school age. The sports programme has been increased for 2009 to include a new sport, track cycling, which combined with the existing programme of Athletics, Badminton, Fencing, Gymnastics, Hockey, Judo, Swimming, Table Tennis and Volleyball brings the total to ten sports. The integrated programme of disability events in Athletics, Swimming and Table Tennis increases the athletes competing in 2009 to over 1500.

Each of the ten sports is combined into a four-day Games environment designed to replicate the feel of major event such as the Olympic Games, Paralympic Games and Commonwealth Games.

Joe wins Gold at National Independent Schools- 1/3/09

Joe became the club's third National Champion of 2009 when he won Gold at the Independent Schools National Championships at High Wycombe on Saturday. Joe from Bristol Grammar School competed in the u19's section  won all his fights by Ippon in under 30 seconds !
Well done Joe.
Along with Joe, the club had three other representitives, Josh - Clifton College, Robbie - St Ursulas and Sean from Queen Elizabeths Hospital. The championships was the first major event for the boys with Sean first to fight in the U15's category.  Sean was composed and focused and after losing his first match by a small score, continued through the rounds to provide some great Ippon throws taking him through to the semi final, where he lost against the Gold medalist leaving Sean with a fantastic Bronze ! Next was Robbie in u17 category who after an aprehensive start found his feet and his confidence to go on and win his next two contests by Ippons . Robbie also lost in the semi-finals, leaving him with a well deserved Bronze medal.  Josh was last to fight, also in the u17 section, and after some debatable refereeing decisions ,was left fighting for Bronze, unfortunately Josh was injured in golden score of the fight leaving him in 5th place. Josh was awarded the Budokwai Cup for the competitor who showed the true fighting spirit of Judo.

We are very proud of the boys and their achievements !

Two  National Champions and a new Black Belt !!

A fantastic weekend for the club, with Em and Lisa

both winning National Titles

and Em becoming the club's youngest ever Black Belt !

With players fighting in two seperate events on Saturday, the weekend was going to be a busy one. Lisa and Chloe travelled to High Wycombe to compete in the girls Independent Schools National Championships.

Lisa  an experienced competitor was first to fight and won all her fights in style with Ippons  to win the Gold and National title. Next  was Chloe competing in her first  championship. Chloe was fighting in a open category and was matched against much larger opponents. Chloe had a good day coming away with the Bronze medal ! Well done girls

Over in Cardiff at the  u20's Welsh Open National Championships, Em was the only competitor from the club taking part. Richard had  picked up an injury in training a few days previously and was unable to compete. Em  had decided to fight a weight category above her usual weight in the hope that she would get more fights. Em's category  was the last to start , Em had really found her form and got off to a great start with her first fight lasting a matter of seconds. Em made easy work of reaching the semi finals, where again the match lasted only a few seconds leaving Em with a place in the final. The final was the last fight of the competiton and yet again Em it look easy throwing her opponent quickly and holding her down to win the match and the title of Welsh Open u20 National Champion. This was a fantastic achievement for Em and was just reward for all the hard training she has done. Em now only needed 10 points for her black belt  and decided there was no time like the present! On Sunday Em travelled to a grading at Swindon and picked up her final points for her black belt, At just 17 this is a fabulous achivement for Em making her the club's youngest ever black belt !We are all immensely proud of her, and hope that her judo continues to flourish.

On day two of the Welsh National Championships, our only competitor was Jack Atkinson in the u10's category. Jack was a little overwhelmed by the event but gave it his best effort. Although not winning Jack gained valuable experience. Well done Jack !

Well done to all who took part in the Club Championships on Thursday , we were slightly down on numbers this year due to a lot of children being ill, however the standard was very high with lots of Ippon throws and close fought matches and a few surprises! The attitude and fighting spirit was great to see and we are very proud of you all!

Class 1 saw some great matches with Issac winning all his fights by Ippon and Torin despite being the lightest and youngest proving to be a great  prospect for the future !. Tomohiro had a great night winning the u24 kilo section and Lily taking the Gold in the girls category. Louie showed true Judo spirit in difficult circumstances to win the Gold in his category.

In Class 2 the lightweight girls fought with great spirit and skillful throws, with Leah leading the way with three wins. Raffi had some very fast ippons to win the lightweight boys. The mid weight boys resulted in a three way tie between Sam, Bradley and Callum , with equal  wins  Callum pipped Sam and Bradley to post on a points win making him champion for the fourth year running. Lucy lacking in opponents in the girls group fought with the boys in the u40k kilo having a great day winning all fights by Ippon, and Sasha pulled off some nice techniques to win the heavyweight boys. With most Improved Player awards going to Laurie and Lucy and Player of the Year award presented to Sam.

Class 3 was a light on competitors , in the u42k Ben was outstanding winning all fights within seconds by ippon, Oscar and Joe had an exciting match with Joe coming out on top. Vikki won the Junior girls and Em the Senior girls. Josh displayed some good skills winning the brown belt boys lightweight and Joe the heavyweight category. Vikki and Michael picked up the Most Improved Players , Joe winning boys Player of the Year. Lisa and Em have both had outstanding achievements throughout 2008 and were jointly awarded girls Player of the Year Awards.

thanks to Lois,  Paddy, Callum, Em and Lisa for helping to officiate
